The Lost Dream
Lynda lived in Joytown from the time she was born and she believed that it was the most peaceful, calm and beautiful little village in the world, although she had never been anywhere else. She loved the tiny white houses and beautiful sunny gardens kept up with great care. Her family was very poor and they had barely enough money to keep body and soul together. Her father was a miner, her mother and her little sister were looking after the house and her elder brother was soon going to join in his father's work. But despite all this, they were happy because they loved and respected each other and the only thing they wanted was to be together whenever they could. Lynda's innermost dream was to get a good education, to find a profitable job and make their life better. Although she knew that she could not expect any material support from her family, she was determined to fulfil her dream. She worked very hard and to the amazement of all her relatives whe managed to win a scholarship from a famous university. When she was leaving she was very sad, because she would be far from her family for five full years. She couldn't afford to go home during holidays and they didn't have the money to visit her. On the other hand, she realised that was the only way to make her dream come true. The years she spent at the university were full of excitement, new experiences and acquaintances. She was eager to know everything about people from different nationalitites so she spent a great deal of time reading books and talking with her friends. During exam sessions she was quite happy, because she worked very hard and she had not a free second. But holidays were the most horrible time for her. Everybody went home to their families and she was all alone in the big campus. The only thing that made her cheerful was the letters she received from her mother. Lynda was constantly writing to her and was happy to know what was going on in her family. One day, as she was reading for an exam, Lynda suddenly felt a pang in her heart, threw the book on the floor and started crying. From this moment she didn't receive a single letter from her family. In vain did she hope that the postman would have something for her. She could get no sleep. At last the day of her departure came. When she arrived in Joytown she was horrified: was this the place she used to love or was it the most terrifying nightmare? When she got close to her house she was even more distressed: the garden looked like a dumping ground, the house was bleak and dilapidated and there was not a living soul around. She entered the house with fear only to find a dark, gloomy and fearsome woman in the sitting room - was this her mother? The story she told her was unbelievable. Lynda's father and brother had died in an accident in the mine and her sister had eloped never to come back. Her mother was alone and without anyone to help and support her. Was this possible? So many years of hard work and dreams of a better life and finally you find everything ruined before your eyes. You have nothing to live for and all your dreams are utterly gone. 1999
