Promises
It was a sunny autumn afternoon. Despite the cold of October’s wind nothing did break the feeling of a good day. The whole city was covered with yellow to brown leaves, spread as a blanket over the streets.
In the suburbs near the forest, there were a few separated small houses. At this time of the year, they were almost empty. All was quiet and peaceful. Nothing did show that someone lived here except a small glimmering light in the window of one of the houses. If someone had got close to that house he might have seen a crouched shadow behind the light of a candle. It was a man. A big, strong man sitting crouching and crying bitterly. The man was Dave. He was new in the city and nobody knew anything about him, but he was alleged by most of the people to be a dangerous person. There were lots of rumors about him -ranging from leaving his wife to killing her. However, Dave neither knew about these rumors nor was he interested in them. He had bought this small secluded house a week earlier and ever since then he had stayed inside. If someone could see him now, like that, he would be shocked by the view of this statuesque, strong man crouched on the bed, with his face in his hands, crying like a little boy.
Dave was sitting almost out of his mind, wondering why he was still alive. He was holding a picture in his hand. Suddenly he put the picture on his chest and hold it tight as if he would never drop it. The picture showed him along with a beautiful woman and a little boy. He fell back on the bed. His tears began to stop. And the memory remained…
Ann was standing at the bar. She was so beautiful. He had looked at her the whole evening. In the end she stood up and went towards the exit. He understood that she would go and he’d never see her again. That thought made him mad and in a spur-of-the-moment decision he ran after her. Unfortunately she had already gone out from the pub. He went outside but he didn’t see her. He started looking around but she had disappeared. ‘Apparently you’ve lost someone’ he heard. That voice bewitched him. He turned towards it and saw her, staying in the dark with her brown warm eyes reflecting the flame of a small candle put on the window. Slowly, he walked towards her, and as he drew near her, he said ‘I’ve lost the most beautiful lady I’ve ever seen. And I think I’ve lost my words and…my heart’…
Three months later they were married. And then one evening he came home from work and saw flame of candles on the table. Then he saw his beloved wife behind the table. The astonished look on his face made her smile. She said ‘I’ll explain it to you’ and that was enough for him not to ask questions until she decided to tell him. They had dinner and the evening went on as usual. Later they sat on the sofa in the bedroom and she huddled up in his arms. He kissed her on her forehead whispering ‘I love you’. She smiled, looked in his eyes and said ‘me too, but I think that soon we will both love another person’. He felt confused and looked in her eyes. The playful flames there made him calmer. ‘What do you mean?’ ‘We are going to have a baby’… At that very moment he felt as if he were the happiest man on this world.
He felt even happier 7 months later when the nurse handed him his son. He felt so happy and proud, and at the same time he was afraid that he’d hurt him. He was so small and frail. Later he saw Ann, kissed her tenderly and promised her that he’d always protect her and the little Jerry. She smiled at him and took his hand in hers.
But he didn’t manage to keep his promise. They were coming back from a picnic in the mountain. He was driving round the cliffs when suddenly a huge, enormous rock fell in front of the car. The last thing he remembered was the screams of his wife and his 4 years old boy.
These screams were sealed in his head. They were telling him:’ you didn’t keep your promise! You left them die.’
He didn’t even manage to hug and kiss them one last time. When he woke up in the hospital they had already been buried ….
His pain started rolling down his cheeks. He bursted into tears and his whole body began to shake. He looked at the candle and saw her warm eyes…Dave hugged the picture tightly and continued crying…
